During the summer the Connaught Rangers Association were hosts to a group of young teenagers and their leaders from Belfast. Earlier in the year, the Connaught Rangers Association attended the official launch of a cross community project, aimed at teaching young people from both sides of the community in Northern Ireland about their shared history. This was the first of many planned visits to Boyle and King House envisaged for the R-Past project. On the day the group was met by Association Officers and received the hospitality of the Royal Hotel for lunch after a long journey down from Belfast. Afterwards the legs were stretched by a walk around Boyle, eventually meeting at King House. Mr. John Clapison, King House staff, greeted the group and gave a full history and tour of the house, which was very well received, and commented on afterwards by all.
The group took a keen interest in the Connaught Rangers Museum and some leaders were surprised to see the archives that have been collected by the association in such a short period of time. It was explained that it was due to the generosity of Roscommon county council, Connaught Rangers Association Officers and members and like minded people in the town of Boyle and elsewhere that allowed the Association to open the museum in July 2005.The auditorium was the next port of call, an excellent venue, and a great addition to King House for talks and film showing, where the group listened to a lecture given by Mr. William Beirne PRO/CRA about the Connaught Rangers Regiment in the Napoleonic wars in Spain and Portugal. As the day came to a close the Association thanked the group for visiting Boyle and looked forward to welcoming many more groups of the R-past project to the town. Many of the group expressed a keen interest to return to Boyle in the future as they found it a charming town with a fascinating history. The Connaught Rangers Association would like to express their thanks to the Royal Hotel Boyle, Management and staff for providing refreshments, and Mr. John Clapison, and Mr. Tommy Egan for their support on the day.
